Poor Poetry: Villanelle

In my last post I mentioned I’d been reading poetry lately and, in fact, I’ve also been writing some of my own. They’re by no means great, hence the title of today’s post, but I thought I’d share them anyway. Here’s my first attempt at a villanelle (I fudged the rhyme scheme a little but it’s all fun so I’m not too worried).

Do Not Go Too Far From Me

Do not go too far from me,
And if indeed you think you may
Just hold my hand before you leave.

I feel you tugging at my sleeve.
So many urgent things to say
Like hold my hand before you leave.

And who or what in time we’ll be?
Come what may,
Do not go too far from me.

You tell me sweetly to believe
That you will never steal away.
Just hold my hand before you leave.

And I do wait for you to see
All things in time must decay.
Please don’t go too far from me.

There is no answer, is no key.
There is no price that we can pay.
Do not go too far from me.
Or hold my hand before you leave.
